Your Questions, Answered
Considering a homebirth? We've gathered the questions families ask most — answered with honesty, care, and Caitlin's years of experience.
About Homebirth
For low-risk pregnancies, research consistently shows that planned homebirth with a qualified midwife is a safe option. Caitlin carries all the necessary equipment to handle common birth emergencies, and she carefully screens every client to ensure homebirth is an appropriate choice. She also maintains a clear transfer protocol with local hospitals should the need arise.
Homebirth is best suited for healthy individuals with low-risk pregnancies — typically those who are full-term (37–42 weeks), carrying a single baby in a head-down position, with no significant medical complications. Twin pregnancy and breach presentation do not automatically disqualify from a protentional home birth but do carry additional risk that require further understanding and planning. During your initial consultation, Caitlin will review your health history to determine whether homebirth is a safe and appropriate fit for your family.
Caitlin is trained to recognize and respond to obstetric emergencies. She carries neonatal resuscitation equipment, tools to mitigate hemorrhage, and other emergency supplies. She maintains a collaborative relationship with local hospitals and will transfer care promptly if a situation arises that requires a higher level of care. Safety is always the first priority.
C-sections are performed in a hospital setting. If a cesarean becomes necessary — whether during labor or identified prenatally — Caitlin will coordinate a smooth transfer to the hospital and she will communicate clearly with the receiving care team on your behalf.
Working with Caitlin
Caitlin Hopper is a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM), a nationally recognized credential awarded by the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM). CPMs are trained specifically in out-of-hospital birth settings and are required to demonstrate competency in prenatal care, labor support, birth, and postpartum care.
Prenatal appointments are held in Caitlin's office. This gives you a dedicated, peaceful space for your care — unhurried visits where you can ask questions, review your birth plan, and build a relationship of trust with Caitlin throughout your pregnancy.
Yes — Caitlin and her assistant come to your home when you are in active labor. She will remain with you throughout your labor, birth, and the immediate postpartum period, typically staying 2–4 hours after delivery to ensure you and your baby are stable and well.
Your first postpartum visit takes place in your home, typically within the first few days after birth. This allows Caitlin to assess you and your newborn without the effort of travel during those tender early days. Subsequent postpartum visits are held in-office as you and your baby settle into your new rhythm.
Costs & Insurance
Caitlin's fee covers your full scope of care — all prenatal visits, attendance at your birth, and postpartum visits. Please contact us directly for current fee information, as pricing may vary based on your individual care needs. A payment plan is available.
Some insurance plans do cover out-of-hospital midwifery care, though coverage varies widely. Caitlin works closely with a medical billing provider that verifies coverage and submits claims on behalf of Still Waters Midwifery. These claims are submitted after services are provided and never increase your out-of-pocket cost but they may help reduce your insurance deductible obligation.
Unfortunately, No. However, Caitlin is committed to making her care as accessible as possible and is happy to talk through your options during a free consultation.
Preparing for Your Homebirth
Caitlin will provide you with a detailed birth supply list during your prenatal care. Most items are simple and inexpensive — waterproof mattress covers, old sheets, a birth pool if desired, and a few other supplies. These supplies can be purchased as a birth kit through our preferred vendors. Caitlin brings all clinical equipment herself.
Yes! Laboring and birthing in water is a wonderful option for many families. Caitlin is experienced with water birth and can guide you in renting or purchasing a birth pool. She will discuss whether water birth is appropriate for your specific situation during your prenatal visits.
Absolutely. Your birth space is yours to fill with the people who bring you peace and support. Many families choose to have a partner, close family member, doula, or even older children present. Caitlin will help you think through who you'd like in the room and how to prepare them.
